About Accent Modification
Is the goal of accent modification to sound like a native speaker?
No. The goal is comprehensibility: your listeners understand you with low effort. “100% native” isn’t required for strong performance.
How long until I notice a difference in my speech?
Weeks for targeted wins (stress/intonation in key phrases); months for stable, automatic habits across contexts.
What does a typical session include?
Review of the previous practice recordings, introduction of a new speech feature or a deeper dive into the current one, then immediate application to your speaking needs for meetings, presentations, and casual conversations.
What's the best way to practice accent modification?
Short, frequent reps tied to real tasks: script → say → record → listen → adjust. Progress is tracked with a reduction in structure, such as going from reading a script to speaking without one, because that gradually increases cognitive load (how much your brain has to remember at one time).
Which is better: learning online or in person?
Both work. For busy people, meeting online for lessons, making practice recordings and receiving feedback is an efficient option.
Online instruction has some advantages such as being able to easily record the meeting, consistent view of yourself in the camera, audio input through headphones and output through a microphone which help reduce noise and interference so you can focus on the sounds.
